The non-material culture of the Social Media Community

The norms, rules, rituals, and practices adopted by the community are the non-material aspects of the social media community. The norms, not liking your best friend's post or not commenting on their DP, is taken as an offence. The rules are to report the fake accounts if found. Wishing a "good morning" every day in the WhatsApp group is a ritual for older adults.

Yes, there are said / unsaid beliefs or values.

  • Sharing memes with a friend make you "meme buddies"; this type of friendship is what everybody considers "COOL" these days.

  • People tend to get influenced by the number of likes on their posts. This, in many cases, lead to anxiety and depression.

  • The traditions in this modern society are to post pictures of the festival or any event for that matter on social media.

  • Through social media, NGOs benefit a lot. Social media marketing has made the custom of donating easier. Every second person nowadays is working for an NGO by posting stories on social media.

MATERIAL CULTURE

To connect to people all over the world would have never been possible by face to face interaction. The MOBILE PHONES, LAPTOPS & TABLETS have made this easier. These are the tangible material components of the social media community.

The users of social media themselves are the material components because they post their pictures to receive likes and comments (non-material components). Many teenagers buy food especially to send snaps to maintain their daily streaks.
